A month before my second novel was supposed to hit the street back in 2005, my editor moved on to another house and I was effectively orphaned, left without an internal champion at the publishing house who really cared whether or not the book would sink or swim. When the publishers’ editorial board decided against picking up the next two books in the trilogy they were about to begin publishing (before they even had a chance to see how the first book did!), I thought my writing career was about to come to a grinding halt.
Things certainly looked bleak. I didn’t have an editor. I was one of a hundred different clients to my agent. I knew that I was the only person that really cared whether or not I continued as a writer.
Determined not to give up, I decided that I was going to do what I had to and learn what I had to learn in order to continue my writing career. I went to bootcamps and conferences to improve my writing. I studied internet marketers and web designers to learn search engine optimization and traffic building strategies. I bugged PR people for their best tips and jumped on the social media bandwagon the minute it came over the horizon. I even reached out to foreign editors and agents to sell subsidiary rights to my existing work and even original novels that hadn’t seen publication in the US yet.
